The University of Florida women’s tennis team is a national champion after beating Stanford 4-3 Tuesday in the NCAA Championship match held in Palo Alto, California.
Lauren Embree won the deciding point for the Gators in singles competition, beating Stanford’s Mallory Burdette in three sets to give Florida its national title.
In beating Stanford, Florida tops a team that had been somewhat of a nemesis to the Gators and the win also breaks Stanford’s 184 consecutive match win streak at home and its 47 match win streak overall.
In the process, Florida wins its fifth national title in program history and its 26th as an overall sports program. The title was the second for head coach Roland Thornqvist in his 10 seasons as Gator coach.
