Darren Clarke held off a charge from Americans Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson to win the British Open championship on Sunday.
Clarke had a final round 70 in sometimes brutal playing conditions to end up at five under par for the tournament, three shots better than Mickelson and Johnson who ended up tied for second place. Mickelson shot a final round 68 and Johnson shot a 72.
Clarke, a popular player from Northern Ireland, won the championship with steady play and with an English crowd definitely behind him. That crowd was tested Sunday it and the players withstood sometimes howling winds and torrential rain at Royal St. George’s golf course.
