Upstart Japan came back twice against the United States women’s soccer team and won the World Cup title Sunday in a shootout over the Americans.
The Japanese came from behind twice, erasing 1-0 and 2-1 American leads. Former Gator Abby Wambach scored the second U.S. goal late and it looked like the Americans were going to get the win but the Japanese countered with a goal by Homare Sawa in the 117th minute to tie the game.
The game ended in a tie and a shootout took place and the Americans failed to capitalize on their chances with only Wambach scoring as the U.S. lost 3-1 in penalty kicks to lose the game.
But the U.S. team missed some chances early in the game and it seemed to come back to haunt them as it could not shake this Japanese team. In fact, the United States had beaten this team in their first 25 meetings.
