Zook Fired; Gator Volleyball To NCAA's, Monday Sports News And Notes

By WRUF Staff on November 28th, 2011

There are a lot of things to talk about today in Monday Sports News And Notes…

  • The Gator volleyball team is one of three SEC teams to make the NCAA Tournament field as the entire bracket was announced Sunday. Florida will open on the road in Cedar Falls, Iowa to face future SEC foe Missouri in first round play on December 2nd. Niagara University and the host school, the University of Northern Iowa are also at this NCAA Regional site.
  • Former Gator football coach Ron Zook is looking for work today after he was fired as the head coach at Illinois. The Illini started the year 6-0 but have lost six straight including a 20 point loss to Minnesota this past weekend to perhaps seal his fate.
  • And some other coaches have been shown the door in college football too. Kansas fired coach Turner Gill after just two seasons and Arizona State is parting ways with veteran coach Dennis Erickson, who may be allowed to retire rather than be fired.
  • The latest BCS rankings are out and LSU and Alabama are the top two teams in the poll after both won this past weekend. Oklahoma State moves up to number three after then third ranked Arkansas fell to LSU, dropping the Razorbacks down to eighth. Stanford and Virginia Tech round out the top five, with Oklahoma State still having to play arch rival Oklahoma this weekend.
