Cowboys Beat Giants; A Former Gator Gets Big League Call Up;Thursday Sports News And Notes

A local high school football team is in action tonight, the NFL regular season has started and there’s much more in our Thursday Sports News And Notes…

** Gainesville High School has a tough football game tonight in Gainesville as it hosts Columbia County.   The Canes won their opener over Yulee last week.  Also tonight St. Francis hosts Tallahassee John Paul II.

** The NFL regular season is now underway and Dallas pulls off an opening night upset by beating the Super Bowl champion New York Giants 24-17 in the Meadowlands.

** Texas Tech men’s basketball coach Billy Gillespie is being investigated by the school after team members went to school administrators to complain how they were being treated by Gillespie.   Gillespie is in his second season at the school.

** Andy Roddick is now officially retired after he loses at the U.S. Open Tennis championship on Wednesday.

** Former Gator pitcher Steven Rodriguez has been called up to the big leagues by the Los Angeles Dodgers; he joins fellow former Gator lefty Nick Maronde in being called up the big leagues in the last several days after Maronde was called up by the LA Angels.
