The Major League Baseball playoffs start today with the two wild card games, one in each league.
Atlanta hosts defending World Series champion St.Louis with Kris Medlen on the mound against Kyle Loehse of the Cardinals. Later, Texas sends Yu Darvish to the hill as the Rangers face lefty Joe Saunders and the Baltimore Orioles. This is the first season with two wild card teams in each league and the first time only one game will decide who advances in the playoffs.
In the American League, New York will play the wild card winner while Detroit hosts Oakland; in the National League, Washington plays the wild card winner while San Francisco hosts Cincinnati.
In other baseball news, the Boston Red Sox fire manager Bobby Valentine after just one season.
