Contract Extenstions, Options Picked Up And More In Sports News And Notes…

An NFL trade involving Jacksonville, a contract extension for a big time college basketball coach and options picked up and left out in baseball in our Sports News And Notes…

** The Jacksonville Jaguars have traded wide receiver Mike Thomas to the Detroit Lions for a future draft pick.   After signing a new contract this year, Thomas was not much of a factor with the Jags and the Lions need receiver help after losing Nate Burleson for the year with an injury.

** Louisville coach Rick Pitino has signed a five year contract extension.   He will stay with Louisville through the 2021-2022 season.

** Lots of baseball news today.   The New York Mets pick up options on infielder David Wright and pitcher R.A. Dickey and the Detroit Tigers say they will not re-sign pitcher Jose Valverde and DH Delmon Young.   Manager Jim Leyland will return next year.

** The Atlanta Braves pick up options on pitcher Tim Hudson, catcher Brian McCann and pitcher Paul Maholm.   The Chicago White Sox sign pitcher Jake Peavy to an extension but do not pick up the option on infielder Kevin Youkilis.

** Nine people have been charged in Florida with illegally betting on youth football games involving players as young as 11 years old.

** A struggling Auburn team and offense now turns the offense over to freshman quarterback Jonathan Wallace as the 1-7 Tigers face 1-7  New Mexico State.

** As expected, the NCAA Board of Directors passed sweeping new legislation that will now punish coaches who know staff members are committing NCAA infractions and bring tougher penalties to schools that commit the worst violations.
