Preview: Gainesville High vs. Miami Central – 6A State Championship Game

The Gainesville High School Purple Hurricanes have accomplished many things this season.   They won a district title, they beat every team put in front of them, and they made it to the state championship.  Now only one goal remains…to be crowned the best class 6A prep football team in Florida on Saturday in Orlando.  In between the Canes and the finish line are the Miami Central Rockets who lost in last year’s title game against Seffner Armwood, although Armwood had to vacate the title for using ineligible players.   Rockets head coach Telly Lockette says the message following the loss was clear…

Opposing Lockette is Gainesville head coach James Thomson, who says simply being in the game isn’t enough….

Thomson knows it won’t be an easy task taking down a very motivated Miami Central team.  The Hurricanes coach praises what the Rockets are able to do on defense…

Respect seems to be a mutual thing between the two schools.  Lockette says the Canes do a variety of things on offense to frustrate opposing teams…

High School football has always had a way of captivating a community in ways college and professional teams perhaps cannot.   GHS hasn’t won a state title since 1980 and the sentiment is true for the Canes; just take one look through Thomson’s recent call log…

Kickoff from Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium on Saturday between the Purple Hurricanes and Rockets is set for 1:07 P.M in Orlando.  All the action can be seen live on ESPN 3.
