SEC mens’ basketball, local basketball teams in district tournament action and a local boy’s soccer team reached the state championship…all this and more in our Wednesday Sports News and Notes…
** In SEC men’s basketball, Kentucky downed South Carolina 77-55 to move in within a game of first place Florida in the SEC with a 7-2 league mark. The Wildcats come to Gainesville next Tuesday. Several league games are on tap for tonight.
** The Buchholz boy’s soccer team advanced to the state semifinal after a thrilling 1-0 home win over Oveido in a regional finals matchup on Tuesday. BHS now will travel to play West Orange in Winter Garden on Friday. Eastside High School’s boys soccer team lost 2-1 to Land O’ Lakes Sunlake in a regional final.
** District tournament play opens for many boy’s teams on Tuesday. Buchholz lost to Ocala Forest; Gainesville High beat Ocala Vanguard; and Newberry, Eastside and Santa Fe won and Oak Hall lost. Women’s regional quarterfinals and semifinals start tomorrow.
** In NBA news, the Houston Rockets tie an NBA record by hitting 23 three point shots in a 140-109 win over Golden State; former Gator Chandler Parsons hit four of them.
