Local Girls Basketball Teams In Regional Quarterfinal Action Tonight

By on February 7th, 2013

Three local teams continue their quest for a state championship tonight in the FHSAA regional quarterfinals in women's basketball.

Buchholz High School faces 20-5 Jacksonville Ed White tonight in Class 7A-Region 1 action.   Buchholz coach Rebecca Williams says her team is led offensively by Miami signee Jessica Thomas.

Williams says Ed White is good but their schedule hasn't been that tough.

Gainesville High School is 24-1 and takes on Citrus in the Class 6A Region 2 quarterfinals tonight. Gainesville will be without leading scorer De'ja Mcphee who is still recovering from an ankle injury.

Canes coach David Gordon says his team plays aggressive defense and is up tempo on the offensive end.

Gordon also said he thought his team would be good, but not necessarily this good.

PK Yonge faces Oviedo Masters Academy tonight as well in Class 3A-Region 1. Blue Wave coach Willie Powers says if his team plays good defense it should be fine.

PK Yonge has had a lot of success in recent years, winning two state championships and Powers says that those former players laid the foundation for future success.

Eastside is also in action tonight but, unlike the three other city teams we've profiled, it will be on the road tonight.
