** In Regional quarterfinals in women’s high school basketball, Buchholz destroys Jacksonville Ed White 79-35 in Class 7A, Region 1 while also at home PK Yonge blows up Oveido Master’s Academy 61-22 in Class 3A-Region 1. Also at home, GHS defeats Citrus 53-39 in Class 6A. On the road, Eastside advances in Class 5A-Region 2 with a 42-37 win over Creekside. Oak Hall lost to Daytona Beach Father Lopez in Class 3A-Region 1.
** Boys district high school basketball tournaments continue this weekend. Teams like St. Francis, PK Yonge, GHS, Eastside and Santa Fe are all still alive in their respective tournaments.
** The Gainesville Sun first reported Thursday that GHS football coach James Thomson was leaving that job for the head coaching position at Deland. Last night, ESPN Radio 850/900′s Cheap Seats had Coach Thomson on and he said he was taking the job in Deland because it is the best for him and his family at this time.
** The Buchholz boy’s soccer team tries for a state title as it plays in a state semi-final playoff game at West Orange Friday night; West Orange is unbeaten at 18-0 this season.
** Gator men’s basketball coach Billy Donovan will again be the head coach of the U.S. Under 19 team that will compete at the FIBA World Championship.
** Who’s number one in men’s college basketball? Top ranked Indiana was knocked off by unranked Illinois Thursday night 74-72 on a last second shot.
** In the SEC, Missouri continues to have its road woes as it loses at Texas A&M 70-68.
** It looks like Florida’s football recruiting class will be at 30 after punter Johnny Townsend is added to the fold. And, offensive lineman Trevon Young is expected to sign a a letter of intent today; he is from Bradenton, filling a need for another offensive lineman coach Will Muschamp talked about in his National Signing Day press conference.
