The Florida women’s basketball team finished its season losing to Drexel 67-57 in the semifinals of the WNIT. The Gators ended the season 22-15 overall. Gator coach Amanda Butler said that she’s looking forward to the 2013-2014 season. She was disappointed in not getting a spot in the NCAA tournament, but she thought the team made up for it by playing deep in the WNIT. Butler added that she wants the team to keep improving.
Senior Jennifer George was selected by the Indiana Fever in the third round of the WNBA Draft. George was a big part of the team’s success despite battling some injuries, and she gained attention from some WNBA teams following the WNIT. She was the only senior on the team and was voted to the 2013 All-Southeastern Conference Defensive team. Butler said that George remained solid through the season.
Florida signed the state’s top recruit Ronni Williams to play in the 2013-2014 season. Williams was ranked No. 13 in the country by ESPN’s Class of 2013 National Recruiting List. Williams grabbed 2,000 points in her high school career at Atlantic High School in Daytona Beach. Williams is the highest-ranked player ever to sign with the Gators. Butler said that she’s excited for Williams to join the team.
Butler added that with the excitement, a lot of improvement will still be needed. She wants the team to become more flexible and versatile, and the goal is to put a consistent and productive starting five on the floor every game.
