The Miami Heat are now one win away from the NBA Finals, surgery for a former GAtor and more in our Friday Sports News and Notes…
** The Miami Heat use 30 points from LeBron James and a solid 16 point night from former Gator Udonis Haslem to beat the Indiana Pacers 90-79 in Game 5 of the NBA’s Eastern Conference finals. Miami now leads the series 3-2 with Game 6 shifting to Indianapolis.
** Former Gator hoops star David Lee has undergone successful hip flexor surgery; Lee made the NBA All Star team this year playing for Golden State.
** NCAA baseball regionals start all over the country today. Florida will face Austin Peay in the Bloomington Regional.
** Ohio State president Gordon Gee could be in some hot water. In a taped speech at a meeting, Gee allegedly said Notre Dame was not invited into the Big 10 because in part “you can’t trust those damn Catholics.” He has apologized for his remarks.
** We don’t yet know who will make up the committee that will help determine the teams in the first college football playoff in 2014 but we do know who will NOT be on it…current media members, coaches and commissioners will not serve.
** In MLB action, Tampa Bay won its fifth straight game, beating the Miami Marlins 5-2; the Marlins have lost nine straight. The Marlins begin a series with the Mets today while the Rays play at Cleveland. Atlanta rips Toronto 11-3 and the Braves will begin a series at home against Washington.
