The Miami Heat hosted the San Antonio Spurs in the first game of the 2013 NBA Finals last night. It was a rematch of sorts for the Spurs and Heat forward LeBron James from his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2007 when the Spurs swept them.
This series got started the same way as 2007; with a Spurs win. However, it didn’t come quite as easily as the Spurs needed a Tony Parker circus shot on their last possession to seal the deal. Even Tony Parker might have been the most surprised it went, but he’s certainly happy it did.
The Heat won’t be discouraged because they know that the first game is not always the most important one; they lost the first game last year in the Finals before winning the next four and beating the Oklahoma City Thunder. James knows the Spurs will want to take a win away in Game 2, but he knows the Heat will come back with an improved game plan.
This is the fifth time that the Spurs have won Game 1 in the Finals and they went on to win the previous four series. However, the last three times the Heat have lost the first game in a series, they have gone on to sweep the rest of that series. Game 2 is Sunday night in South Beach before the series heads to San Antonio for games 3-5.
