Today marks the beginning of Florida’s Sunshine State Games Alachua County Festival, which is an exhibition of amateur athletes in swimming, ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, fencing, synchronized swimming, archery, and rowing. There are over 2,900 athletes that will be competing with 300 of them coming from Gainesville and surrounding areas.
Steven Rodriguez, the event coordinator for the festival, says he hopes the community will come out and enjoy the festivities.
Rodriguez hopes that with so many people in the community coming out, some will be encouraged to get their kids involved in one of the sports or at the very least, enjoy their time at the Games.
The Games go through the weekend and all events are free and open to the public.
