There is a lot of sports action coming up this weekend, with a former Gator in the hunt on the PGA Tour, the Tour de France continuing and of course, a lot of big league baseball…
** Former Gator golfer Camilo Villegas is competing in this week’s PGA Tour event, the John Deere Classic in Illinois. He started well, shooting an opening day 64 to tie for the first round lead. Play continues all weekend.
** The Tour de France will continue this weekend as well.
** Major League Baseball has its final series before the All-Star break. Atlanta is hosting Cincinnati while Miami faces Washington. The red hot Tampa Bay Rays, winners of eight in a row, entertain Houston this weekend.
** Speaking of the All Star Game, fans vote in Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman over LA Dodger rookie Yasiel Puig and fans vote in Toronto reliever Steve Delabar as well. And Tampa Bay pitcher Matt Moore is now an All-Star, replacing injured Texas pitcher Yu Darvish on the AL roster.
** The American League has two hitters on torrid paces entering All Star play. Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera is the first hitter ever to have at least 30 homers AND 90 runs batted in before the All Star break. And Baltimore’s Chris Davis has the most home runs (34) of any player at the break since 2001.
** NASCAR has its next race this weekend in New Hampshire. All the drivers and teams are trying to catch points leader Jimmie Johnson.
