A successful Friday Night Lights, the Tampa Bay Rays are bumped from first place and medals for two former Gators in our Monday Sports News and Notes…

** By all accounts, the Friday Night Lights recruiting weekend for the Gator football program went well.   The Gators picked up some verbal commitments and several other top prospects went away impressed.

** Speaking of Gator football, practices will soon be starting in preparation for the August 31st opener against Toledo.

** In MLB, the Tampa Bay Rays were knocked out of first place in the AL East after losing to New York 6-5 while Boston beat Baltimore.   The Red Sox host the Rays tonight.   Elsewhere, Atlanta completes a sweep of St.Louis and Miami downs Pittsburgh despite hitting coach Tino Martinez handing in his resignation.

** Former Gator swimmers Ryan Lochte and Melani Costa-Schmid pick up silver medals in swimming at the World Championships going on now in Spain.   Lochte won a silver as part of a medley team and Costa-Schmid also got a silver in the 400 free.

** Two NFL teams suffered injuries to key players in training camp.   The Denver Broncos lost starting center Dan Koppen to a torn ACL while the Baltimore Ravens lose tight end Dennis Pitta after undergoing hip surgery.
