** The Gator football team loses senior wide receiver Andre Debose to a season ending knee injury; Debose tore his ACL and he will miss the season.
** The last of golf’s major tournaments, the PGA Championship, is underway at Oak Hill in Rochester, New York. Former Gator golfers Matt Every, Brian Gay and Billy Horschel are in the field.
** NFL preseason football tonight as Tampa Bay faces defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore.
** In baseball, Atlanta wins its 13th straight by beating Washington 6-3 and Detroit wins its 11th straight by downing Cleveland 6-5. Miami loses 4-2 to Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay falls 9-8 to Arizona. Today, Miami faces Pittsburgh while the Braves and the Rays have the day off.
** Alex Rodriguez has formally appealed the suspension handed down to him by Major League Baseball; he can play while the appeal is heard.
** Florida State University has a new athletic director after it hires Duke administrator Stan Wilcox.
