** The Gator football team holds the first of four open practices tonight at 7:30pm at the Gator lacrosse fields. The practice is open to the public.
** Gator defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin is pleased with where his defense is at now. (See related story on our website).
** In MLB news, the Tampa Bay Rays break a six game losing streak by beating Seattle 5-4 while Atlanta downs Philadelphia and Miami trips up Kansas City 5-2. The Rays play Seattle again tonight while the Braves and Marlins are off.
** Former Gator pitcher Nick Maronde has been optioned to the minor leagues by the Los
Angeles Angels; Maronde has been called up and sent down several times over the last couple of seasons.
** Former Gator kicker Caleb Sturgis has won the placekicking job with the Miami Dolphins after an impressive performance in their opening exhibition game. Veteran kicker Dan Carpenter was waived to make room for Sturgis.
** The Gator cross country teams were both picked to finish second in the SEC behind Arkansas in a preseason coaches poll.
