A Wimbledon champ retires, MLB results and more in our Friday Sports News and Notes…

** Gator Fan Day takes place Saturday for the Gator football and volleyball teams.   The football team will have an open practice at 9am in The Swamp and the football and volleyball teams will sign autographs (only provided posters only) later in the O’Connell Center.

** Defending women’s Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli has retired at the age of 28; she has been nagged with injuries since winning the title and lost in her most recent match earlier this week.

** In MLB action, Tampa Bay beats Seattle 7-1 to move to within two games of first place Boston in the AL East; the Red Sox lose 2-1 to Toronto.   The Jays play at Tampa Bay this weekend while Atlanta plays Washington and Miami takes on San Francisco.

** MLB wants to expand video replays for the 2014 season but that must still be approved by the players and by league owners.

** NFL preseason football continues and Saturday Jacksonville faces the New York Jets and we’ll have the game live for you starting at 6:30pm.   Miami faces the New England Patriots.
