Gator football coach Will Muschamp is hopeful some of his injured players will be ready for the opening week of the college football season.
Muschamp said before yesterday’s practice that fullback Hunter Joyer (hamstring) defensive back Vernon Hargreaves III (shoulder) defensive tackle Damien Jacobs (patella) and offensive lineman Jon Halapio (torn pec muscle) could be ready for the opener against Toledo.
Among the other items he mentioned:
** Cody Riggs and Marcus Maye are the starters now at safety.
** At linebacker, with Antonio Morrison suspended, Ronald Powell, Neiron Ball and Mike Taylor would be the starters at this time.
** Asked about special teams, Muschamp said Loucheiz Purifoy and Solomon Patton are the kickoff returners while Marcus Roberson is returning punts with the chance that a guy like Hargreaves could also fit in that mix.
The team had its last open to the public practice Monday and Muschamp announced that Valdez Showers has made a permanent move from defense to offense; he’ll play running back but could also be a factor in the passing game.
A player Muschamp mentioned who has been a bit overlooked but that has come on lately is linebacker Jarrad Davis. The freshman has played himself into a backup role at this point at the linebacker spot.
Muschamp also mentioned that defensive end Jonathan Bullard will also slide inside to help in the middle of the defensive line in certain situations. At 270 pounds, Muschamp said Bullard can now stand up to the point of attack inside and that he will add some depth there in certain defensive packages.
