** The Gator football team has a day off from practice today as classes start today for fall semester at UF. It was also announced that walk-on running back Mark Herndon and defensive back Tim Clark would be awarded scholarships.
** The undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins team was saluted at the White House yesterday but some members did not go to the event because of political reasons. Nearly three dozen team members did show up for the event.
** Two starting quarterbacks have been named by NFL teams after training camp competition; Michael Vick is named the starter for Philadelphia and Brandon Weeden will start for Cleveland.
** Former Gator basketball player Nick Calathes signed a deal with the Memphis Grizzlies; he has been playing basketball overseas but he might now get a chance to play in the NBA.
** The schedule has been released for the Gator men’s basketball team and it features some tough non-conference opponents. In one four game stretch, Florida will play Florida State, Connecticut, Kansas and Memphis.
** The Tampa Bay Rays are in first place in the AL East now after beating Baltimore 7-4 while Boston lost to San Francisco. Atlanta lost 5-3 to the Mets and Miami lost 6-4 to the LA Dodgers.
