One week to go before the start of college football, the Tampa Bay Rays stay in first place for a day and the Gator football team prepares for Toledo, all in our Thursday Sports News and Notes…

** Just one week to go before the start of the college football season; Florida opens its season in nine days against Toledo.

** The Gator football team is preparing for the Rockets, a team with an excellent returning offense, featuring a 1,000 yard receiver and running back.

** The SEC released the 2014 league football schedule.   Florida will play at Alabama and the Tennessee game moves from September to an October date.

** Former Gator linebacker Jon Bostic is $21,000 poorer today after being fined by the NFL on his hit on San Diego wide receiver Mike Willie in an exhibition game last week.

** The Tampa Bay Rays stay in first place in the AL East lasted one day.   The Rays lose 4-2 to Baltimore while Boston beat San Francisco to take a one game lead over the Rays.

** Atlanta downs New York 4-1 but probably loses lead off hitter Jason Heyward for the season after being hit in the jaw by a pitch.   Miami loses to Los Angeles 4-1; those teams play today while the Braves play in St.Louis.

** Ichiro collects his 4,000th pro hit yesterday playing for the New York Yankees against the Toronto Blue Jays.   He joins Pete Rose and Ty Cobb as the only players to reach the 4,000 hit mark.
