Florida Gator defensive coordinator DJ Durkin will coach his first game in that capacity this Saturday against the Toledo Rockets. He says their offense is high powered and discussed how Florida might try and stop it.
Durkin was a UF linebacker coach last year and helped lead one of the stingiest defenses in the country. The defense allowed only 14.5 points per game, which was good for fifth best nationally. A defensive strength this year could be the secondary as cornerbacks Marcus Roberson , Loucheiz Purifoy, and Jaylen Watkins will be used at the same time in some packages because of their play-making abilities.
Durkin and the Gators hope they can stop the high-flying Rockets who were 9-4 a season ago. Toledo returns a 1,000 yard rusher and a 1,000 yard running back in its offense as well as a veteran offensive line. The season kicks off right here Saturday with coverage on ESPN 850 WRUF beginning at 8 AM with the Tailgator Pregame Show.
