Gator Hoops Player Ineligible; Former Gator Called Up, Wednesday Sports News and Notes…

By on August 28th, 2013

Bad news for an incoming University of Florida men’s basketball player but better news for a former Gator baseball player in our Wednesday Sports News and Notes…

** Incoming power forward and freshman Chris Walker is not going to be eligible to play for the Gators, at least right away.   He did not enroll in classes by the deadline of midnight last night and, hoping to get his academics in order, he could enroll in spring.

** Meanwhile former Gator baseball player Matt den Dekker has been called up to the big leagues by the New York Mets.

** In the NFL, rosters are now down to the mandatory 75 players and no Gators were cut.  However, rosters must be reduced to 53 players by Saturday.

** The U.S. Open tennis championship continues today in New York.   The upset of the tournament so far goes to 17 year old American qualifier Victoria Duval who upset 2011 champion Sam Stosur in three sets.

** In MLB action, Tampa Bay falls two and a half games behind Boston in the AL East after losing 6-5 to the LA Angels.   The Red Sox beat Baltimore.   Atlanta tops Cleveland 2-0 and Miami loses to Washington 2-1.
