** Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel will be suspended for the first half of the season opener Saturday in a plea agreement reached with the NCAA. The NCAA had investigated whether or not Manziel received money for signing autographs and it was concluded there was an “inadvertent” violation.
** The start of the college football season is here; games begin tonight. Among them, Ole Miss at Vanderbilt and South Carolina faces North Carolina.
** The final NFL preseason games will be played tonight before rosters have to be pared to 53 players by Saturday. The rosters are now at 75.
** High school football opens tonight as Oak Hall faces Florida School for the Deaf at Oak Hall. All the other action is tomorrow night.
** The Gator football team received some good news when running back Matt Jones returned to practice in a limited capacity. He’s had a viral infection and he will not play Saturday in the season opener.
** In MLB action, Atlanta downs Cleveland 3-2 while Miami loses 4-3 to Washington. Tampa Bay beats the LA Angels 4-1.
** The U.S. Open tennis championships continue today in New York. Venus Williams was a second round loser yesterday.
