The Florida Gator volleyball team is on the road for the first time this season, heading to San Antonio where they will face the UT-San Antonio Roadrunners tonight at 5:30. The Gators hope to build off of their performance in the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational last weekend, where they went 3-0 on their way to the tournament title. Defensive specialist Holly Pole says the team came out of the tournament knowing a lot more about itself.
One thing Florida learned about last weekend was the strength of its defense. While the offense was assumed to be a strong suit for the team with the return of All-American middle blocker Chloe Mann and setter Taylor Brauneis, the Gators proved they carry a more than capable defense by tallying 119 digs and 24 blocks in their first three games. Pole spoke about the team’s strategy defensively.
UTSA is led by outside hitter McKenzie Adams. Adams leads the Roadrunners with 85 kills through three games, and is the reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Gator head coach Mary Wise says her team knows what they’re facing in Adams.
Following tonight’s match Florida will swing over to Austin, Texas where they will go up against Penn State and Stanford later this weekend as part of the Nike Big Four Classic. Despite the lure of the big name matchups happening in just a few days, Pole says the team is focused entirely on UTSA.
Coverage of the match begins tonight at 5:20 on ESPN 850-WRUF.
