The eighthh ranked Florida Gator volleyball team swept the UT-San Antonio Roadrunners 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-2 ) to win their fourth consecutive game of the young season on Thursday night. Outside hitter Ziva Recek led the Gators with 12 kills, while setter Taylor Brauneis added 36 assists.
Gator coach Mary Wise was pleased with the performance, saying that beating a tough team on the road helped the Gator learn a lot about themselves.
Taylor Unroe recorded 17 digs to lead the Gators defensive effort. Wise spoke about Unroe’s performance.
Another player who Wise came away from the game pleased with was outside hitter Gabby Mallette. Mallette tallied nine kills in the contest, her most of the season. The performance was a result of a her hard work in practice over the last few days.
The loss drops UT-San Antonio to 2-3 on the season. However, Wise believes the Roadrunners record will improve after seeing them in person, making Florida’s win all the more impressive.
Next up for the Gators is a trip to Austin, Texas this weekend where they will compete in the Nike Big Four Classic. Florida will take on second ranked Stanford Saturday, then turn around and battle top ranked Penn State Sunday. Coverage of Sunday morning’s game begins at 10:50 on ESPN 850 WRUF.
