The Florida Gator volleyball team won both games of their double header on Saturday to be crowned Active Ankle Challenge Tournament champions. Florida defeated the Iona Gaels 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 27-25) in their first matchup of the day before taking down the Western Michigan Broncos 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 28-30, 25-18) in the nightcap.
Sophomore outside hitter Ziva Recek had one of her best statistical games ever with 21 kills against the Broncos after sitting out for most of the Iona match. Freshman right side hitter Alex Holston had a great day overall, recording 13 kills against Iona before spiking 12 against Western Michigan. Gator coach Mary Wise spoke about Holston’s performance.
Despite winning both games Saturday, Wise was not entirely pleased. She is still concerned her team’s play in multiple areas.
The struggles Wise alluded to were prominent in the third set against Western Michigan, which Florida dropped despite having match point four times. However, Wise did acknowledge that the adversity Florida faced in the match will help them down the road.
Next up for the Gators, a home date with their rival Florida State Seminoles on Tuesday. First serve is set for 6, with coverage on ESPN 850-WRUF starting at 5:50pm.
