A bunch of teams trying for the wild card in the American League, a new leader in the National League Central and a college football coach in trouble in our Wednesday Sports News and Notes…
** The Texas Rangers and the Tampa Bay Rays are tied for the AL wild card lead after a 7-1 Texas win over the Rays last night. Cleveland is a half game out after beating Kansas City 5-3, dropping the Royals three and a half games back. Baltimore stays two games out after beating Boston 3-2 while New York slips three and a half back after losing 2-0 to Toronto.
** In the National League’s Central division, there is quite a pennant race going on. The St.Louis Cardinals have taken sole possession of first place after an 11-4 win over Colorado. Pittsburgh is now a game out after losing 5-2 to San Diego and Cincinnati is just two back after beating Houston 10-0 to give the Astros their 100th loss of the year.
** Nebraska football coach Bo Pellini could face discipline after a tape leaked in which he roundly criticized fans for leaving early in an eventual win over Ohio State. He used profanity in the tape as well.
** Vanderbilt has dismissed wide receiver Chris Boyd from the team. He had been suspended while an investigation took place into his alleged involvement in covering up a rape of a student. Boyd was dismissed after his conditional guilty plea that charges him with a misdemeanor as opposed to a felony. He was Vandy’s second leading receiver a year ago.
** The Gator volleyball team is now 9-1 after sweeping FSU on Tuesday night. The Gators will be on the road this weekend.
** The Gator football team continues to prepare for the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday as Florida tries to beat the Vols for the ninth straight time.
