Baseball Roundup: Rays Rocked, Boston Rolls, and a Friday Forecast

By on September 20th, 2013

Heading into their series with the Baltimore Orioles, the Tampa Bay Rays must be careful if they are going to hold onto their wild card spot after being run over 8-2 last night against the Texas Rangers. Tampa pitcher Matt Moore struggled, giving up three home runs to the Rangers. Rays manager Joe Maddon says that he was satisfied with the smoke Moore was throwing at Texas, and it was just a matter of his pitcher being unlucky.

Tampa begins its series with Baltimore level with Texas in the race for an AL wild card lead. Despite the ups and downs of the playoff push, Maddon says he is optimistic heading into tonight's game.

First pitch is at 7:10pm.

The Boston Red Sox clinched a playoff spot after beating the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 yesterday. Boston is close to clinching the AL East as well and the Red Sox will face Toronto tonight.

Atlanta is close to clinching the NL East, and they will look to push closer to that achievement today when they travel to Wrigley Field to take on the Chicago Cubs.  Starting Braves pitcher Paul Maholm is 10-10 heading into today's tilt with the Cubbies.

Also in the NL, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati have wild card leads and those teams play each other this weekend.   St.Louis has a one game lead over the Pirates in the NL Central while the Reds are two back.

The AL wild card has Cleveland just a half game back of the Rays and Rangers with the Orioles two back, Kansas City three back and the New York Yankees three and a half games out.
