A lot happening today in our Friday Sports News and Notes…
** Another college football weekend is around the corner and it started last night when nationally ranked Clemson tops ACC foe NC State 26-14; the Tigers stay unbeaten with a win.
** The NFL week kicked off last night too and the Kansas City Chiefs move to 3-0 with a 26-16 win over turnover plagued Philadelphia, giving long time former Eagles coach Andy Reid a win over his old team that falls to 1-2 on the year.
** The wild card races stay tight in baseball. Texas and Tampa Bay are tied for the wild card lead after an 8-2 Texas win over the Rays last night. The Rays open a big series at home with Baltimore tonight with the Orioles two games back of the wild card. Texas visits Kansas City with the Royals three games back.
** In other wild card action, Cleveland is only a half game back after beating Houston 2-1 and those teams play this weekend. New York is three and a half games out after losing 6-2 to Toronto; the Yankees face the San Francisco Giants this weekend.
** The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox clinched playoff spots with wins; LA has won the NL West while Boston has clinched at least a wild card spot. In the NL wild card, Pittsburgh has a one game lead on Cincinnati for the wild card after hammering San Diego 10-1; the Pirates host the Reds this weekend.
** Area high school football cranks back up tonight with a lot of teams opening district play. Among the games are Eastside at Belleview, PK Yonge facing St. Francis, Newberry visiting Chiefland, GHS facing Lake Weir, Buchholz taking on Fleming Island and Santa
Fe hosting Dunnellon.
