The Florida women's tennis team is headed back to the home courts as they will host the Bedford Cup in Gainesville starting on October 10th.
The team ended the 2013 season with a 26-3 overall record, and was crowned the overall champions of the SEC tournament. Additionally, the Gators finished as semifinalists in the NCAA tournament.
The Gators have played in a few tournaments thus far in the fall, and the Bedford Cup is the sole tournament the team will host at home during the fall semester.
The Gators added three freshmen to their roster in the off-season, including two from Australia, and the third from Georgia.
The upcoming home tournament will be a test for the new players on the team.
“For three of them, it's going to be their first go around, and sometimes you don't know how that's going to translate under the lights for the first time,” head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “But, I really like this team, I really like how we're committed to work on and off the court.”
Thornqvist decided which players would compete in the tournament based on class availiablity and exams.
“The three freshmen have stayed home a little bit more, and they're more able to miss a class here and there,” he said.
Thornqvist said he is excited by the amount of talent he has on his roster for this season, and he is expecting a big season out of his team.
“This entire fall, for all of them, but in particular, for our freshmen, we want them to play a lot of matches–get a lot of data,” Thornqvist commented.
The tournament will kick off Thursday October 10th in Gainesville.
