Week Eight of area high school football is upon us and several local teams will see some action tonight.
We first head to Lake Butler, where the Newberry Panthers (4-2) will be taking on the Union County Fightin’ Tigers (5-1). After a tough 30-12 loss in their first district game of the season over Dixie County last week, the Tigers are hoping to gain back some momentum. Union County coach Ronnie Pruitt says this game will be a big challenge.
“We’re on the one game season now,” Pruitt said. “I mean, we lose this week and our hopes are done of making it to the playoffs and that is our ultimate goal.”
The Panthers on the other hand, are coming into this game with a 31-29 victory in their first district game of the season against Williston. Newberry coach Kepa Sarduy says a win over the Tigers would be huge for the Panthers moving forward.
“A win over Union County would put us right back into the mix for the playoffs,” Sarduy said. “A loss makes it really difficult because then you have to count on other teams to help you out.”
Kickoff for Newberry/Union County is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Next up, the Buchholz Bobcats (3-3) will travel to Orange Park to take on the Oakleaf Knights (3-4). The Knights are entering this game with a 44-0 shutout over Arlington Country Day. The Bobcats however, are coming off a 26-14 loss to GHS last week. Bobcats coach Mark Whittemore says his team tends to struggle with away games and needs to really focus on preparing themselves in order to come out victorious.
“We have not played well when we’ve left the friendly confines of Gainesville,” Whittemore said. “So we really need to work on getting the mental preparation side of it together.”
Some other notable games scheduled for tonight include PK Yonge (3-4) v. Ocala Trinity Catholic (4-3), GHS (5-1) v. Ocala Vanguard (3-3), Hawthorne (1-4) v. Trenton (4-1), Chiefland (5-1) vs. Williston (5-2), and Santa Fe (3-3) v. Belleview (3-3).
