The Florida Gator volleyball team defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-16) in Fayetteville Friday night. The victory leaves Florida at 7-0 in the SEC and 18-1 overall. The Gators dropped the first set, but rallied to win the next three. Gator coach Mary Wise said it was a tough road match.
“This is what being on the road is like, and you have to work through it,” she said. “It was a match where our stable players were not very stable today.”
Florida dominated the statistics, having 20 more kills, 19 more assists, and 11 more digs than Arkansas. However, the Razorbacks were able to play Florida close in every set, aided by 13 Gator service errors. Wise elaborated on the situation.
“I think to win a match when you're not at your best is huge, but there are a lot of teams left on our schedule where if we play the way we did tonight, we're not coming away with a win. I think we were very fortunate tonight. But if you look at it we had 20 more kills, so we scored 20 more points than Arkansas. It shouldn't have been close.”
Chloe Mann and Ziva Recek tied for the team lead in kills with 13 apiece, while Taylor Brauneis led the team with 47 assists. Holly Pole led the team in aces, sending three serves by the Hogs. Wise had high praise for pole after the match
“I'm so proud of Holly Pole, who has just had a hard time finding her stroke on the serve. Three aces tonight with only one error, she had three aces coming out of a timeout. She really made an adjustment and worked so hard on her serve.”
Next up for the Gators is a road date with the Missouri Tigers Sunday in Columbia. First serve is set for 2:30, with coverage beginning at 2:20 on ESPN 850-WRUF.
