A cold Monday Night Football game, Heisman Trophy finalists announced and more in our Tuesday Sports Update.
** Six finalists for the Heisman Trophy have been announced with the winner being crowned in New York this weekend. The finalists are last year’s Heisman winner, quarterback Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M, along quarterbacks Jameis Winston of FSU, Jordan Lynch of Northern Illinois and A.J. McCarron of Alabama. Also named are running backs Tre Mason of Auburn and Andre Williams of Boston College.
** Wake Forest has hired Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson as its new football coach, replacing long time coach Jim Grobe who recently resigned.
** A frigid Monday Night Football game in Chicago sees the Bears whip the Dallas Cowboys 45-28 to move to 7-6 on the year while December woes continue to plague the Cowboys.
** Lots of significant injuries in the NFL as New England tight end Rob Gronkowski and Arizona cornerback Tyrone Matthieu will miss the rest of the season with torn ACL’s. And Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson may not play Sunday because of injury and the same goes for Denver wide receiver Wes Welker who reportedly has another concussion, his second in the last month.
** In MLB, Joe Torre, Bobby Cox and Tony LaRussa have been elected to the Hall of Fame by the expansion era committee. They’ll be inducted this July with anyone else elected by the Baseball Writers this year.
** Gator men’s basketball transfer Eli Carter will receive a medical redshirt this year as he continues to recover from a broken leg he suffered last year.
