A possible union for college athletes, another loss for the Orlando Magic and an upset in SEC men’s basketball in our Wednesday Sports Update…
** Former Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter is spearheading an effort to team up with the United Steelworkers Union to form the first labor union for college athletics. The effort is said to be aimed at private institutions first with Colter calling the NCAA “a dictatorship.”
** An upset in men’s SEC basketball as LSU at home dumps 11th ranked Kentucky 87-82. Missouri also beats Arkansas 75-71 with more games on tap for tonight. The Auburn-Alabama game was moved from tonight to Thursday because of bad weather.
** The Orlando Magic lose at Detroit 103-97 and will play at Toronto tonight. The Miami Heat have a big game with NBA leading scorer Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
** Major League Baseball has approved the use of a protective cap for pitchers; it will not be required of pitchers to wear them and experimental use will take place in spring training.
** The Gator softball and lacrosse teams are preseason nationally ranked. Softball is number three while lacrosse is number four.
** The second ranked Gator women’s tennis team is scheduled to play UCF at home today, weather permitting.
