The Florida baseball team kicked off it’s centennial season with a 4-0 win against the Maryland Terrapins Friday night.
Junior lefty Bobby Poyner got the start for the Gators, going 5.1 innings and establishing a career high with five strikeouts while getting the win. The Gator bullpen was superb with Ryan Harris and Danny Young helping Poyner throw the combined shutout.
Florida also showcased a few of their freshmen on Friday, with three of them even in the starting lineup. Peter Alonso, Buddy Reed, and Ryan Larson all contributed to the win, catching the attention of all who were at McKethan Stadium.
The Gators scored all the runs they would need in the third inning. Reed drew a one-out walk after Alonso singled up the middle. Once sophomore Richie Martin singled to load the bases, a fielder’s choice by Larson and an error on the Maryland catcher allowed the two freshman to score. In all, Florida scored three times in the inning.
Florida added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a Taylor Gushue sacrifice fly.
This afternoon, it will be a showdown of freshman right-handers as the the Gators send out Brett Morales to the mound against Maryland’s Mike Shawaryn. You can hear the game live on ESPN 850 WRUF starting at 3:55 pm.
