The Florida baseball team moves to 3-1 on the season after defeating UCF 5-1 Tueseday in Gainesville.
Two pitchers making their first Division I starts highlighted the matchup. For the Gators, freshman Logan Shore allowed only one run on three hits in just over five innings of work while striking out four and allowing no walks. In an almost identical outing UCF starter Zach Rodgers allowed only one unearned run in five innings pitched.
Through six innings of play, this Sunshine State showdown was proving to be a pitcher’s duel with the game tied at 1-1. Florida scored in the first on a Taylor Gushue solo homer while UCF’s run scored on an error.
The Orange and Blue lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of five walks given up by three different Knight relief pitchers. Florida took a 2-1 lead when UCF junior Joe Marotta walked Zack Powers on four straight balls with the bases loaded, allowing Richie Martin to score. More damage was done when Braden Mattson singled to left field driving in two crucial insurance runs and Justin Shafer plated another run with an infield single, his first hit of the season.
Florida Head Coach Kevin O’Sullivan was pleased with the seventh inning rally.
“Offensively, we had the big inning there in the seventh with the four runs, Braden Mattson got the big hit there with runners on and you know the offense is coming. We hit some balls hard again tonight. There’s obviously still a lot of things we have to work on, we have to make some better adjustments, we had a runner on third, we didn’t get him in. But overall, we are starting the season 3-1.”
On the mound Danny Young got the win in relief for the Gators, allowing no runs and only one hit in 3.2 innings of work. F
