Gator baseball players storm the field after a successful squeeze bunt gives Florida a series sweep over Connecticut.
The Florida Gator baseball team celebrates a sweep of Connecticut today after beating the Huskies 6-5 Sunday.?? All three wins came in extra innings in the weekend series.
The win gives Florida a season high four game winning streak as well.?? Florida won the game in the bottom of the 10th as Josh Tobias tripled to lead off the inning and one out later was squeezed home on a bunt single by Casey Turgeon.
Junior Taylor Gushue (2-for-3, three RBI) tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a solo homer?over the left field wall.
Florida Head Coach Kevin O?Sullivan says this series has been a big one for his offense.
?It doesn?t happen very often. Three straight games where you play extra innings, this weekend was a great team effort. There were a lot of guys who contributed; we won them (the games) in different ways, Casey (Turgeon) had the walk-off on Friday, we got hit by a pitch to win last night, and we got the bunt by Casey again today,? O’Sullivan said.
UConn took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off Florida?s redshirt junior Karsten Whitson. However, the Gators responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Richie Martin led off with a single to right center, followed by a RBIdouble from Turgeon off the right field wall to drive in Martin. The second run would come from a sac fly from Gushue, bringing across Turgeon to tie the game.
Gushue came through for the Gators again in the third with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, giving Florida a 3-2 edge. It wasn?t long before the Huskies would tie up the game 3-3, off a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Martin would answer in the bottom of the frame by drawing a based-loaded walk to give Florida a 4-3 advantage.
Uconn took a 5-4 edge in the sixth, but with the Gators down to their final two outs in the game; Gushue cranked his second homer of the year.
The Huskies posed a threat for the Gators in the 10th, loading the bases up with only one out. Junior left-hander Bobby Poyner was able to come in and force the next two batters to fly out and strikeout.? He also picked up the win on the mound.
After Tobias scored the winning run, he said?it felt good to come through with a big hit for his team.
?It felt good and it was a good hit to have. I was looking for a good pitch to drive and I kept my head in it and got a good swing on it. I knew if I just kept swinging, it would eventually fall in,? Tobias said.
Turgeon says this weekend sweep will help his team moving forward.
?The hitters did well today and it was a big team win. We needed it. The sweep right there gives us a lot of confidence going into this week,” Turgeon said.
