Gator football will begin spring drills next week after holding its annual?Pro Day on Monday and Gator coach? Will Muschamp discussed injuries, changes and other things concerning Gator football.??
It goes without saying that Florida needs a bounce back year, finishing last season 4-8 and failing to become bowl eligible for the first time since 1990. The problems on offense were evident to all and Muschamp says those issues are being addressed with a new offensive coordinator and new offensive philosophy.
“You got to have believe in what you are doing, and I feel like that was a huge issue for us last season, we lost belief and confidence in what we were doing,” he said.
Muschamp says spring practice will open with?nine players out due to injury, including three starters. Junior running back Matt Jones (torn meniscus) and senior defensive tackle Leon Orr (fractured wrist) were starters in 2013, while senior wide receiver/kick returner Andre Debose had been a starter before missing all of last season with a torn ACL. Muschamp said Debose is expected to be medically cleared to return March 28 but will wear a non-contact jersey.
When asked about Matt Jones, Muschamp sounded optimistic.
“Matt Jones is progressing very well, he will be cleared for everything May first. He will not go through spring, he will not go through non-contact, he will be rehabbing there in the pit during practice, but I’m extremely pleased with his progress and where he is.”
Muschamp also said offensive lineman?Max Garcia could be?moved to center to replace graduated starter Jonotthan Harrison. Tyler Moore, therefore, will move permanently to guard. And, injured lineman Chaz Green also returns after missing all of last season and with players like D.J. Humphries, Trenton Brown, Tripp Thurman?and others returning, Muschamp says he likes the developing depth on the offensive line.
But the focus will be on a new offense with a new offensive coordinator in?Kurt Roper.
“Well I think anytime you’re installing something new offensively, which we are, it?s important for those guys to get some turns and reps, but you rep the guys that are out there, it is what it is, nothing you can do about it.” Muschamp stated.
Expect a lot of moving parts in the spring, with?lots of new faces, a new offense and?a renewed commitment on the part of a new team.
