Lots of different things to talk about in the sports world today in our Wednesday Sports Update…
** The Gator football team continues practice in preparing for the 2014 season. The practices Thursday and Friday will be open to the public at the Dizney lacrosse field.
** The Gator men’s basketball team will play in the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament in the Bahamas in November and will play Georgetown in its opening game. The Gators would then either play UAB or Wisconsin.
** Former Gator basketball star Marreese Speights is in trouble today after he was charged with a DUI in Tampa. The current member of the Golden State Warriors was released on bail.
** The San Antonio Spurs have hired WNBA player Becky Hammon as an assistant coach; she will retire from the WNBA after this season.
** A lot of softball and baseball action up in Alachua this week as the city hosts Babe Ruth baseball championships and softball championships as well with teams here from all over the United States.
** The PGA Championship gets underway tomorrow and we don’t know yet if the injured Tiger Woods will play.
** In baseball, Tampa Bay loses to Oakland 3-0 Tuesday night; the teams play again tonight in a game you can hear live on ESPN 850 WRUF starting at 9:30pm.
** Miami downs Pittsburgh 6-3 in baseball action while Seattle beats Atlanta 4-2 out west.
**
