The NFL opens its regular season, Gator volleyball has a tough road test, baseball, U.S. Open tennis and much more in our Thursday Sports Update…
** The Gator football team will not replay the Idaho game from last weekend as it was officially declared a no-contest. The teams will try to play in 2017.
** Gator coach Will Muschamp announced that redshirt sophomore linebacker Jeremi Powell will be out a few weeks after undergoing surgery on his knee.
** The NFL kicks off its regular season tonight as the Green Bay Packers visit defending Super Bowl champion Seattle.
** The Gator volleyball team (3-0) faces a tough road test tonight at FSU; you can hear the game live at 5:50pm on ESPN 850 WRUF. Florida will return home Saturday to play a powerful Texas team as well.
** The U.S. Open tennis championship continues in New York. Women’s top seed Serena Williams moves to the semifinals with a win. Japan’s Kei Nishikori became the first man from that country to reach U.S. Open semifinal in nearly 100 years when he won on Wednesday. Men’s top seed Novak Djokovic also made the semis.
** In baseball, Toronto rips Tampa Bay 8-2 while Atlanta beats Philadelphia 7-4 and the New York Mets edge Miami 4-3. Miami and Atlanta are off today while the Rays end their series with Toronto.
