The Columbia Tigers (3-0) left Citizens Field with a win for the second time in three weeks, putting away the Buchholz Bobcats (1-2) with a 28-23 win.
Facing a two-point deficit in the fourth quarter, Columbia running back Lonnie Underwood put the Tigers up with a 16 yard touchdown with just under seven minutes remaining.
Columbia head coach Brian Allen says the win feels gratifying after losing to Tallahassee Lincoln last week.
“I think (the players) were more excited to get an opportunity to get back on the field more than anything, you know after a tough loss at home,” said Allen. “These guys are ready to get back and prove themselves right this year… you know we came tonight and we’re still not where I want to be, but we are starting to take strides.”
Underwood led the Tigers with 124 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.
Looking ahead, the Tigers will start district play when they travel to Jacksonville to take on Parker High next week.
“The next six (district games) are the ones that count towards you being able to achieve your goals at the end of the season,” said Allen. “You don’t win these ones that we play here on out in these six weeks, then you can forget about the other teams.”
Meanwhile, Buchholz will look to regroup as they open up district play when they host Fleming Island.
