The Tampa Bay Rays lost to the Yankees Wednesday night 3-2 in Tropicana Field, causing the Rays to miss out on their chance at a series sweep.
Rays pitcher Alex Cobb gave one of his worst performances in a long time. He had previously given up less than three runs in 12 consecutive starts since July 4th. However in Wednesday night’s game, he allowed three runs and four hits over six innings. He was grateful for teammates like Wil Myers, who prevented the Yankees from getting a grand slam when he caught Brett Gardner’s fly ball in deep right field.
Rays manager Joe Maddon believes Cobb’s problems began when he hit Chris Young with a curveball. From that point on, his pitching was not as sharp as it had been. Over the past week, six of New York’s batters were hit by a Rays pitcher.
Evan Longoria hit one home run and had RBI grounder during the game for the Rays.
Tampa Bay moves on to play the Chicago White Sox on Friday night in their final home series of the season.
