Gainesville High and Dixie County to Host Playoff Games Tonight

The Gainesville Hurricanes (6-5, 4-0) look to survive and advance in the 2014 FHSAA football playoffs when they host the Sunlake Seahawks (9-2, 3-1)in the regional semifinals on tonight.

The Seahawks hope to get some revenge at Citizen’s Field. The Canes eliminated Sunlake in the state playoffs last year in the regional quarterfinals.

“(Sunlake) has a chip on their shoulder,” said Gainesville High head football coach Mark Latsko. “We know what to expect and we know they’re going to be gunning for us so I think our intensity level from the opening kickoff is going to be high and our kids are going to be ready to play.

Sunlake’s defense has recorded four shutouts this year. They have only allowed 6.2 points per contest through 11games.

Gainesville junior quarterback Caelan Christian will lead the charge in combating the Sunlake defense. Christian has thrown for 20 touchdowns and over 1900 yards this season. He will have the luxury of playing in his own backyard.

“The kids love playing at Citizen’s Field,” said Latsko. “They love playing in front of the home crowd, and the band, and the cheerleaders… we’re excited about that.”

Kickoff from Citizen’s Field is set for 7:30 p.m.

** The Dixie County Bears will try to continue their undefeated season (10-4, 4-0) when they host the Union County Tigers (9-2, 3-1) in the 1A regional finals tonight.

The Bears and Tigers are district rivals. Dixie County won a regular season match up against Union County back in October.

“Union County is well-coached, their kids play hard,” said Dixie County head football coach Brent Wilkerson. “It’s a great rivalry – it’s always great when these two schools get together as far as fan support. It will be a packed house.”

The Bears are led by junior running back Julian Robinson, who rushed for 163 rushing yards per game and has 14 touchdowns on the ground this year.

Kickoff from Dixie County High School is set for 7:30 p.m.

** Also in 1A playoff action, the defending 1A champion Trenton Tigers (10-1, 4-0) will host the Hamilton County Trojans (8-3, 3-0) tonight. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
