With the addition of Jordan Scarlett and Jordan Cronkrite, the Gator football team is hopefully building depth at running back, with junior Kelvin Taylor coming off of a 2014 season that consisted of only a couple games that showed his potential, and redshirt sophomore Adam Lane going off for 109 yards and a touchdown in the Birmingham Bowl against East Carolina.
With no more Matt Jones, Taylor may be the favorite to take over the running back position, and even though it may not be as close as the quarterback competition, there is still a lot more spring ball to play, and Adam Lane is impressing a lot of people. Lane says he really enjoys the two styles of quarterback he gets to play with.
“They both bring two different things to the table, they are both fast, they are both athletic. One can do this better, one can do that better, but both of them together, us having them is going to be great. I can’t wait.”
Florida finished eighth in the SEC in rushing last season, averaging 4.4 yards per carry with 22 rushing touchdowns. The Gators of course want to improve those numbers but according to Florida coach Jim McElwain, it may have to wait a week or two.
“Lane’s a little nicked up right now, it’s hard to compete for the job when you’re on the sidelines. KT is doing an outstanding job, he’s a guy that’s awful fun, he really enjoys the game, he’s got great energy. I really like the way things are going with him, and obviously come fall, there is going to be a lot of competition.”
On the other hand, this is the chance for Kelvin Taylor to try and separate himself from the pack, and show the coaches why he was a four star and a top 10 running back in the nation coming out of high school.
“I’m just so excited to get back out here with my teammates, and just have a great spring, and finish spring strong, and I just took from last season to stay positive and everything else will fall into place.”
Practice resumes Friday; the Orange and Blue Debut is still scheduled for April 11th.
