The defending national champion Florida gymnastics team is on track for a possible three-peat. The Gators tied for first in their semifinal with Utah, scoring a 197.475. This score came behind a performance that wasn’t the best the team has seen this season. Florida started on the floor, with solid early scores from Claire Boyce, Kiersten Wang, and Kennedy Baker. The freshman earned a 9.90 in her NCAA floor debut. A bump in the road came when Bridget Sloan made an uncharacteristic mistake and got the second-lowest score in the event during the first session, a 9.675. Kytra Hunter and Bridgette Caquatto didn’t let the mishap add any pressure, posting strong scores of a 9.95 and 9.90 respectively. Hunter posted the highest floor mark in Florida’s NCAA semifinal history for the second time, doing it first in her freshman year. The Gators were a little shaky on vault, with Hunter putting up an unusual score of 9.850. With good scores from the rest of the team, highlighted by Sloan’s 9.925 and Alex McMurtry’s 9.90, Florida was able to recover in the event and stay close for second place entering the midway point. On bars, The Gators posted three scores of a 9.90 or higher. Sloan earned a 9.95 on the event she received two perfect 10’s on this season. The other three scores consisted of two 9.85’s and a 9.825, rounding out a solid event for Florida. There were some low tallies to start off on beam, bringing back memories of the SEC Championships where the Gators lost their lead after a weak performance. Boyce received a 9.625 in the first routine, followed by Rachel Spicer and her atypical score of 9.775. Ericha Fassbender helped Florida get back on track, scoring a 9.825, then Sloan scored a 9.875. Hunter made up for her previous vault score, hitting a great routine and earning a 9.90. McMurtry followed suit, also earning a 9.90. Utah came up and tied for first following a perfect 10 on bars by Georgia Dabritz. After a match of cards the Gators were awarded the top spot going in to the Super Six. In the individual competition, Kytra Hunter shared the 2015 NCAA All-Around title with UCLA’s Samantha Peszek, with a score of 39.60. This is Hunter’s second NCAA All-Around title, winning it in 2012 as a freshman. This is the third time a Gator has won this title in four years, with Bridget Sloan winning it in 2013.
