The Florida baseball team is now tied for the top spot in the SEC East after beating the Mississippi State Bulldogs 10-5 Sunday to complete a three game sweep. Florida has now won six straight SEC games.
The hitting star of the day for Florida was first baseman Peter Alonso. He had four hits, two of them homers, and drove in four runs.
Gator coach Kevin O’Sullivan liked what he saw from Alonso.
“Offensively, what can I say? We swung the bats great all weekend,” he said. “Obviously Pete had a great day offensively, had a couple homers. It was good to get him going.”
Five Gators picked up an RBI Sunday afternoon including freshman Mike Rivera who had two hits, two RBI and a run scored.
On the mound for Florida to start things off was Alex Faedo who has been solid in his last couple outings. Faedo allowed three runs to score in his 4.1 innings on the mound. The win for Florida was given to Taylor Lewis who now has 2 W’s on the year. He pitched 4.2 innings and did not allow an earned run.
O’Sullivan was pleased with Lewis’ performance.
“As far as Taylor Lewis, the turning point of the game was with the bases loaded and one out and he got a 6-4-3 double play (in the fifth). This was a turning moment for him, he threw some really good sinkers today, he made the ball move and he threw to the bottom half of the strike zone, something he hadn’t really done this year.”
Florida is now 31-10 and 12-6 in the SEC. Next up for Florida is a home game Tuesday against Bethune Cookman.
