Near No-Hitter, Gator Football Recruiting, NBA Free Agents In Thursday Sports Update (7/2)

A near no-hitter in Tampa Bay, Wimbledon, NBA free agent news and more in our Thursday Sports Update…

** Cleveland pitcher Carlos Carraso comes within one strike of throwing a no-hitter before losing it and settling for an 8-1 win over the Rays.   Miami downs San Francisco 6-5 and Atlanta beats Washington 4-1.   All those series conclude today.

** The Florida football team gets a quarterback verbal commitment in the 2017 class from 6’3″ signal caller Jake Allen from St. Thomas Aquinas High School.   He’s the second verbal in the class.

** Former Gator and NFL player Brandon Spikes pleads guilty to a hit and run accident in Massachusetts that occurred last month.  He will serve a year of probation for the incident.

** The NBA free agency period continues as many players get new deals to stay with their current teams and players like Tyson Chandler and Paul Pierce sign new deals with different teams.

** Wimbledon continues today.  Men’s fifth seed Kei Nishikori withdrew and women’s seventh seed Ana Ivanovic lost.   Today, Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are among those scheduled to be in action.
